Obeying the commands of his mother, Olivier leaves for his grandmother’s house, only to disappear into the provincial French countryside.
Upon his disappearance, his already tension-ridden family crumbles. His overbearing mother, jealous sister and angry father grow distant from the ever-growing loss of their well-loved family member. Although the police officer reassures them that Olivier will soon be found, the audience understand that this is highly unlikely.
Six years after his disappearance, a boy appears in a police station in the same red cap Olivier was last wearing. His mother instantly recognizes him, but for then onwards the question looms: Is it really him?
Holland adapted this movie from a true story she read in a French newspaper of a missing child, the director recalls: “the basic story interested me, but I wanted to fill it with my own experience, with things close to me. I wanted to be able to see myself in the character of the mother. I wanted my characters to be more lucid than the protagonists of the real event.”
