Dan English
In anticipation of his EP “In Grace”, set for release on December 4th, Iowan musician Dan English has today shared a new mythology infused single & video “Glue”. Drawing on grandiose themes of folklore and legend, “Glue” arrives like a divine transmission - managing to sound ethereal yet grounded in human experience.
Opening in humble fashion, “Glue” combines ambling acoustic guitars with simple yet driven bass and drums. Over the top, English’s vocals are deep and weary, as though confessing personal truths he wishes to keep half-secret. As the track approaches its chorus however, it takes on another life altogether. The introduction of operatic vocals from Melody English (Dan’s best friend, cousin and collaborator), combined with lush string sounds and keys, gives the track an otherworldly quality. This is all tied together nicely thanks to production from Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Bon Iver) and Heba Kadry (Alex G, Bjork).
‘Glue’ is accompanied by a music video from animators Jocelyn & Jocelyn. The duo, who have previously collaborated with Weezer and The Killers, tap into the endearing mythos of “Glue” to create a dreamy Tolkeinian fantasy. Speaking about the process, Jocelyn & Jocelyn said “We wanted to make something that worked in harmony with Dan’s song, which sounds like it comes from inside a mountain. We’re taking you deep inside that mountain to explore the facets of high fantasy, from the grounded to the almighty along the way.”
‘In Grace’ is the follow up to English’s 2018 debut album Fruit Boy.
