Where are we going/ cause I keep falling,” 16-year old Joyce Cisse – better known as Flowerovlove – sings on the feature single from her debut Extended Play. Dubbed, ‘Keep Falling’, it’s a dreamy bedroom pop track exploring the relationships we form with ourselves as self-love and devotion deepens.

Hypnotic beats and melancholic melodies developed organically from her brother’s brain paired with the singer’s intuition. And culminating the cathartic EP, ‘Think Flower’, comes youthful euphonies melded with nostalgic sounds.

London-born, and from Côté d’Ivoire, the emerging artist is an Instagram item adored for her cutting-edge sense of style where she models nifty garms from baggy pullovers and oversized suits with eccentric ties, to cool cowboy boots. As a young, immigrant, and woman of colour with a clear-cut vision, Flowerovlove is dedicated to sustainability, having fun and uplifting women. Coeval caught up with Joyce Cisse AKA Flowerovlove for a conversation about her deep love for music, her groovy garbs and her debut EP, ‘Think Flower’, launching 14/05/21 .

Can you introduce yourself to our readers? Describe who you are and what you do in your own words.

I’m Flowerovlove! I am a 16-year-old musician and I also model. Flowerovlove means we are blossoming, growing and developing, like a flower does. ‘Flower’ also represents women and the power that we hold and bring into this amazing world. That is why I only work with women and have an all women team.

How did you begin making music? Who/what have been your influences and inspirations?

It actually started by me accidentally making a rap song at 13. I had written songs before when I was 11-12, but the rap song ‘Around the Block’ was the first song I ever recorded. My influences lie heavily in the music I’ve previously listened to and the feelings I’ve collected from them. I want people to feel the same nostalgia & hiraeth that I do when listening to a song like ‘Landscape with a Fairy’ and recently ‘Transparent Soul’.

Why do you make music?

I make music because it’s the best thing on the face of the Earth. It’s so crazy to me that from a bunch of sounds you can be uplifted and expressive. I want people to feel amazing.

What has it been like for you breaking into the industry at just 16 years old? What challenges have you faced?

It’s super fun over here, I love making music with my brother in his room and going back and forth to school and to meetings. Any challenges? I’d say it’s hard sometimes to know how to choose the right people to be in your circle and your team, because my music is my baby and I need to trust the people who will be around it. But I always go with my gut.

Why is sustainability so important to you? How do you express this using your platform?

Sustainability is important to me because living this way helps to protect our planet and improves the quality of our lives. The whole ‘Think Flower’ EP title is promoting the idea of being more sustainable.

Your debut EP ‘Think Flower’ comes out this May. Can you tell us a little about what inspired the extended play and what you are most looking forward to/ are most nervous about?

The inspiration for ‘Think Flower’ really tunnels in on caring for our planet and caring for ourselves – mainly on the inside! It aims to make sure that we love ourselves. This is why ‘Keep Falling’ is the opener and it ends with ‘Pot of Gold’, finalising that what once was no longer is and no longer matters.

I’m most excited for people to hear the growth in the music because everything just keeps getting better, vocally, lyrically, and production wise.

Tell us about your single ‘Keep Falling’ – what inspired it? Can you tell us about the writing process?

The song writing process for ‘Keep Falling’ was probably one of the fastest I’ve ever done. It was written in my brother’s room. He started making the beat and I just sang whatever came to mind. Later realising the meaning of the lyrics I put in. "Keep Falling" is inspired by thinking about the presence of your own love towards yourself and devoting yourself to yourself, which is completely me.

What inspires your style and the distinct way you dress?

I wear whatever is appealing to my eye. Whatever I wear is THE outfit. It’s not actually about the clothing. I love the colours, the composition of patterns, and randomly placing things together. Honestly seeing people’s outfits on the streets of London inspire my style and especially the elderly - they have so much swag.

What overall do you want to say to your listeners with your music?

It is only getting better and better. Welcome to the Flowerovlove family. I’ll forever make sure we are vibing on good frequencies. You are powerful. Music is healing power.  Dance like no one is watching and enjoy every second of the music.

What’s next for Flowerovlove?

Taking over the music world.
