Wander the cold hard streets of New York City with Joe Buck and Ratso trying to make a living in a city that doesn’t let them.
While the title of British director Schlesinger’s film would make you believe you’re about to watch a country western, the term midnight cowboy is a colloquial term for a male hustler, which is exactly what the protagonist tries to be to make ends meet. Unfortunately for Joe, most encounters, as a sex worker, end in disappointment. Along the way he meets an unlikely friend, Ratso, a con man whose intentions are questionable. However, the friendship blossoms, as both characters rely on each other on the streets of the city.
Schlesinger’s finale is unpredictable and turns the film on its head. From a light-hearted drama, the director adds a new meaning to the friendship, by injecting it with a harsh reality.
