Lauren Auder
We were first introduced to Lauren Auder’s music at night time, which made for a perfect context to immerse myself in his the depths of his romantic songs. Clear and soothing, the purity of his tracks brought to light the potential of this 19-year-old Londoner, who grew up in the South of France. At first listen, his debut EP Who Carry’s You makes you feel like you’re in catharsis. Raw emotions, enthralling baritone and acute/astute lyricism – this is a far-reaching (and uncompromising) approach to modern pop sensibilities we’re being offered here. We took the time to have an exchange with the talented songwriter about his musical upbringing and playlist tips. Welcome to the world of Lauren Auder, a place of light and darkness.
Who's Lauren Auder? How would you describe Who Carry’s You to someone unfamiliar with your music?
I am a 19-year-old singer songwriter, that’s the easiest way to put it. As for Who carry’s you, I believe it’s somewhere between baroque pop and modern experimental electronica… But it’s all very darn loose.
When has the idea to become a singer first come to you?
I guess it’s something I’ve always done, I first truly decided it was what I wanted to do when I figured out I had things to say...
What kind of music did you grow up listening to?
I grew up listening to so many various genres and artists that it’s actually pretty difficult to pinpoint - a few artists that truly made their mark are probably Prince, The Cure and My Chemical Romance…
How was it for you to sign to True Panther Sounds, the NY label also home to Kelsey Lu, King Krule and Abra?
It’s always an honour to be trusted by a label with such an amazing track record, despite the pressure to follow in those great artists footsteps haha.
What's the most satisfying comment you've heard about your music?
Whenever anyone mentions the links to Scott Walker I feel very giddy, despite it possibly being simple flattery.
And now, what's the most annoying remark?
I think the most annoying remark would be that my work is, well, unremarkable. I have no qualms with people disliking it, I understand that, but yeah, unremarkable would hurt.
