LIA LIA
Berlin-based LIA LIA's wild new track "I'm A Moth" is now out. The guitar-driven single reveals a hitherto unknown aspect of the multi-faceted musician and is the first offering from an upcoming EP.
LIA LIA is the brainchild of half-Chinese, half-German artist Lia Wang. Her early releases drew global attention from i-D, NME, Gorilla vs. Bear, The Independent and BBC Radio1, and led to a personal invite from Doja Cat to support her on a string of German shows. LIA LIA has also been featured in print publications like Vogue and Nylon Japan, and creative-directed and starred in a campaign for Louis Vuitton.
A stunning video directed by LIA LIA is paired with the track "I'm A Moth". The artist emerges from a Moscow tower block, seeking to make sense of her new surroundings, grabbing a guitar, and breaking into song and dance.
LIA LIA says
"I’m a Moth!! Follow the dream of a Moth who wants to be a Rockstar! We shot the video in Moscow, but I don't speak any Russian so communication was a little bit difficult. It was also really hard finding a concert that would let us film inside, because of all the COVID restrictions. Our Lucky Star was [Russian duo] “Ic3peak”, they let us film during their concert and the guy you see me punching in the last scene was actually their opening act “Zavet”! That was the final scene we needed!”
In an interview with the unconventional artist, LIA LIA brings us into her weirdly fabulous & bizarre world as she explains "I'm A Moth".
Will you let us know what it is like being an artist in the Berlin music scene right now?
I have no idea! I have social anxiety and that makes it difficult to belong anywhere.
I read that LIA LIA stands for Live Impact Area Legacy Interface Adapter, can you please elaborate on this?
Haha, yea that was something I made up, because I wanted everyone to write my artist name right in ALL CAPS. I just hate how “Lia Lia” looks, it’s “LIA LIA”!
Friends can call me Lia <3 [heart emoji]
What was your journey into the industry like? As a child were you surrounded by sound?
I always loved singing, and somehow I'm less anxious and scared when singing and it really helps with my anxiety.
I moved countries a lot when I was younger and I carried a very small guitar with me everywhere and I just sang to people. I loved to sing a capella under tunnels or under bridges, because they have such an amazing reverb.
Anyways, my friends liked the music and got my stupid songs stuck in their head. So the first thing I bought when I got a little money was a microphone, sound card, keyboard and headphones, then I started recording in my bedroom.
You have supported artists such as Doja Cat - what have been your best moments so far?
She is the cutest! We drank champagne together and she showed me all her different flavoured chapsticks. Coke, Sprite and Fanta!
You’re new single "I'm a Moth!!", is super cute & fantastical, what was it like producing this track?
I was very angry because I had been writing everyday and not getting anywhere. And everything I’ve written so far was so sad and melancholic, I wanted to make something bad ass, dangerous and bold! I grew so frustrated that I just scrambled the guitar as hard as I could and screamed on top of my lungs! As you can hear, I failed miserably.
The visuals for this single are adorable, where did you find the moth costume?
I immediately had this vision after making the song and drew it in my notebook, It’s a mixture of what I would wear as a kid to my ballet performances and theatre costumes from the 1920’s. I also added some kickboxing elbow pads and knee protections, because life as a moth is very dangerous! Then my best friend and designer Clara [Colette Miramon] brought the costume into life.
How do you want your audience to feel while listening to "I'm a Moth"?
I want them to feel like they can be anything they want to be!! Even if you’re born a moth, you can still be a rockstar… you just have to box your way to the top.
