Today, the LA and Chicago natives are headlining some of the world’s most prominent music festivals, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Ultra. At the age of 21 and 22, they have already completed a 32-stop headline tour, played in almost every continent, soundtracked commercials for Apple, and even surpassed the 10-million monthly listener mark on Spotify.

During Jakarta’s We The Fest, we managed to pencil in a quick sit-down with the duo to hear about their recent collaborations and plans for the upcoming season.

So where have you guys come from:
Robert Hauldren
: We came from LA, but we’re from Chicago. A long day of travels!

What are your first impressions of Jakarta? Is this your first time here?
Frederic Kennett:
It’s our first time, we really liked what we saw.

What about other parts of Asia?
Robert
: We’ve played in Tokyo but that’s kind of the closest we’ve got.

Do you feel like there are any differences between the ways your fanbase responds in Asia compared to Europe and the US?
Frederic:
It’s definitely different.
Robert: I’m excited to see what it’s like when we play tonight.

What’s the craziest live experience you’ve had?
Frederic:
My favourite show has been the time we went back to Chicago to play Lollapalooza. That, for me, was the craziest show.
Robert: The first time we played Coachella, that was definitely a wild moment. I think that was the first time we played to a really, really big crowd. I got up on stage and was like, “wow, I’ve never seen anywhere close to this many people.” It was definitely a wow moment.

Speaking of your recent work, how did you guys connect with Wafia? Was that through Future Classic?
Frederic:
We wanted to get into studio with her for a while, it was mostly through our close friends that we connected. Yeah, it was so much fun to write with her, and the song turned out really good.

And you’ve been working with Jacob Banks?
Frederic:
Yes, we definitely look forward to doing more in the future.

What are the parameters that you’re considering when considering collaborations?
Frederic:
However they come to us…
Robert: Just how everything else comes to us- if we like it and we think we can bring something cool to them, they can bring something cool to us, that’s ideal.

Paradiso!!! Thank you so much 💜 | @itscolinmiller

Going back to your live shows, how have they evolved over the past few seasons? How’s the one we’re about to see different from the shows you played last year?
Fredric:
We’ve been mixing all of our songs a lot more, making the whole show feel like a Louis The Child show.
Robert: I feel like, in the past, it used to be very much half our music, half other people’s music. The set now is 95% Louis The Child music and remixes. It feels really cool to be at a point where you can hit all these different types of energies and emotions using just your own music. That’s something we’ve always focused on, covering a lot of different types of energy and emotions throughout our shows.

Where are you off to next?
Fredric: Back to California. Once we’re back, we’ll continue to create as much as possible.

First time in Indonesia! See you at We The Fest tonight 💜
