Nilbar Gures
Most of Güreş’ work revolves around women and their roles in the public and private sphere and relationships with each other. While the artist is known for her photographic works, her various mediums include collages, videos, performances, and objects. Her practice revolves around her own Kurdish-Alevi cultural identity, which, for the last three years, has inspired her to seek out other indigenous groups in countries such as Brazil, Bolivia, New Zealand, Sweden to learn about their cultural practices and traditions. With this exploration, Güreş seeks to highlight cultural parallels and collective stories of colonialism with impositions placed by dominant cultural identities.
Nilbar Güreş was born in 1977 in Istanbul. She received her BA in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Marmara University, İstanbul, and her MA in Painting & Graphics from the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. She has participated in the 20th Biennale of Sydney (2016) and the 31st Bienal de Sao Paulo (2014) amongst various others. The artist’s body of work is often characterized by the deeply personal imbued with both highly specific and, perhaps, vague cultural history and traditions. She currently lives and works between Istanbul and Vienna.
