Olive Parker
Do you enjoy studying in London?
I moved to London for university six months ago and I can safely say that the past six months have been the best of my life; London has exceeded all my expectations.
What made you realise that you want to get into the film industry?
I'm still not entirely sure I want to work in the film industry per se, but I definitely want to work with film and images - the idea of making fashion films appeals to me a lot. I originally tried to get into film to impress some boy but accidentally discovered my calling alone the way. I think I knew I wanted to make films when I watched My Own Private Idaho by Gus Van Sant, I feel like it really changed my life.
Which foreign films do you like best?
The worst questions in the world for me are 'what is your favourite film' and 'what music do you like' because I am so into so much that it's hard to narrow down, but I will answer as best I can. Last night I actually went to see an incredible Icelandic film called Heartstone at the BFI Flare festival, so my favourite films change weekly. However perhaps in my top five of all time I would list Cleo from 5 to 7 (Agnes Varda), Belle de jour (Luis Buñuel), Daisies (Vera Chytilová), Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (Jacques Demy) and Chungking Express (Wong Kar Wai).
How would you define a really good film?
A film that, no matter how satisfying the ending, still disappoints you by not lasting forever.
How does one create an unforgettable movie?
Stay far away from normality.
What kind of music do you like?
Italo, cold wave, mutant post punk with a disco beat that I can walk around the city streets to.
Which film hero do you aspire to be like?
Esperanza Quintero from Salt of the Earth.
