Ramell Ross
Ramell Ross’s photography is an ode to the American South where bodies in his photos are primarily interacting with the Southern land around them. Based in Rhode Island and Alabama, Ross is currently a research affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab and an assistant professor of the Practice of Art at Brown University. He received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English and Sociology at Georgetown University and went onto receive his Master of Fine Arts in Photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. Ross’ work plays with and questions the idea of a gaze and visual politics, while deconstructing the notion of representation. His photography is suspenseful, yet heavy in a still sort of movement.
His most recent exhibition was in Concord, Georgia in 2016, entitled “The Do Bad Barn: A Directory of Souther Culture” and he was most recently awarded as the Aperture Portfolio Prize Winner. His work has been covered by the New York Times, CNN, The Huffington Post, and other major publications and news outlets. Ross’ work also deals with black bodies in the South and he has explored this as a filmmaker. His work brings a refreshed perspective to the South, while still bringing important issues to the forefront as well.
