Sombrero Twist

Sombrero Twist

Sombrero Twist is the project of an ever-so elusive photographer known for their eye-catching, serendipitous of the mundane photography.

The project was birthed in 2012 on Instagram and is based mainly in Italy, particularly Milan.

“I’ve started my project because I was looking for a way to archive all the faces, objects and places that aroused my interest: I’m absolutely amazed by the richness of elements that faces can communicate and the various stories that could be imagined behind them,”

Capricious comes to mind when one thinks of the project’s Instagram feed with photos ranging from an onlooker capturing works at a museum to a random shopper at a grocery store. The banal is transformed into something quirky and delightful to watch. We start to live through the variant expressions on strangers’ faces, inventing narratives and becoming immersed in the photographer’s (various) environments.

“Crowded places fascinate me: in particular, I love supermarkets because they’re a perfect set for shooting. The bright lights and the colors of the products packaging stimulates me so profoundly that I’m used to spend a lot of time there in search of inspiration.”

Most of the photos are shot on an iPhone, accounting not only for maximum accessibility, but also adding a sense of familiarity that can be replaced with alienation with more high-end photographs:

“A lot of my photos are shot with an iPhone because it’s absolutely perfect to capture the moment, even if the results can be pretty rough: with the smartphone in my pocket I shoot photos everywhere and every time there is the possibility and this allows me to not miss any possibility to shoot anything that can be interesting for me.”
