The Hybrid Nature of Fashion
Aiming to highlight fashion sustainability, a considerable buzzword which has in recent years gained both negative and positive traction in the industry. Fighting for the dual functions of fashion, asking “Can fashion be used as a vehicle not only for an aesthetic image but also as a tool for re-appropriating the naturalness of human existence?”. Clothes account for an approximate 10% of global carbon emissions, but as mentions, “the demand for clothing, according to forecasts, will continue to grow from 62 million tons in 2015 to 102 tons in 2030.”.
Through the medium of fashion photography, The Hybrid Nature of Fashion aims to convey the urgency of change needed in the fashion industry. Adverse forms of plastic packaging like large sheets of bubble wrap and packing supplies are incorporated throughout the shoot: but these elements are clearly contradicted by the illustrations cleverly put around the images, portraying the ecosystems and their inhabitants that are indirectly harmed by these human follies.
