Under Surveillance

‘The Fashion System’ Inspired by the views of French philosopher, Roland Barthes’ in his analysis of fashion in Système de la Mode(1983), we question the amount freedom artists in the fashion world truly have, having to conform to a systematic, collective visual language to be deemed ‘beautiful’ or ‘interesting’. Avant-Garde fashion designers spend their lives interpreting their ideas and their identity through their work, yet, to interpret one’s purest form of ideas, one must allure the general public eye within ‘the fashion system’ to even be recognized. The most original works or art are subconsciously categorized by the fashion system before the designer even explains the meaning behind their art. There is an entire methodology, a glorified non-verbal language, that artists must conform to in order for the general pubic to connect with their work. This makes us question if ‘avant-garde’ truly is able to exist to its fullest definition.
