Waiting for death

Waiting for death

When Rosi Offenbach first started working as a freelance photographer in the fashion industry in 2014, she didn’t question the wildly unrepresentative standards of the industry. Young, tall and very slim models were the norm and Offenbach was new to this industry, she wanted to be a part of it, not challenge it.

Over time however, Offenbach’s outlook changed. More and more she began to question the systems in which her work was defined by. She realised that not only are the fashion and media industries serving and sustaining a patriarchal society through their exclusive and damaging rules of beauty and appropriateness; but that these industries are also an intrinsic part of our capitalist social order.

This photo series by Offenbach is a sarcastic outlook on the fashion and media industries, where despite the steps in recent years to introduce a more positive and diverse range of models, it is still seen as radical in itself to depict older women as lively multi-dimensional people who exist as much more than objects waiting for death, even after the age of 24.
