When I was there

When I was there

Our childhood and teenage years are often remembered with a both a hazy and intense filter. Our memories are like flashes, quick moments and fragments distilled in our minds waiting to be accessed. Sometimes the moment is clear but the time, age, and situation are fuzzy. How we felt is often the strongest and clearest part of the memory. “When I was There” is a photo series by James Whitmore which explores the sensation of remembering his youth.

Shot in the area he lived in as a teenager with a model who looks like Whitmore’s teenage self, the series is inspired by the themes of identity, dreams, youth, and memories. There is a hazy quality to the photos that is evoked by the light dappling through the trees and the shadows cast on the models face. The styling by Wilma Déman is youthful and surreal. The sporty wetsuits and bikinis with pops of neon contrast the fuzzy aura of the photos. “When I Was There” creates a warm feeling that gives the viewer a peek into James Whitmore’s teenage years.
