Wolfgang Tillmans
Most recently known for his posters and t-shirt designs against the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union or, “Brexit”, due to his self-identification as European, Wolfgang Tillmans has always been known for his political and social activism through his art and photographic work. His early work in the 90s depicted youth culture in club scenes and was featured in i-d, Spex, Interview, and other subculture magazines. His work explores homosexuality, gender identity and fluid binaries.
Born in 1968 in Germany, Tillmans was the first photographer to be awarded the Tate Annual Turner Prize and is a member of the Royal Academy of Art. From 2009 to 2014, he served as an Artist Trustee of the Tate Board. Seeing exhibition spaces as a larger composition to his photography, Tillmans’ exhibitions are all site-specific. His photography has been featured in several museums such as the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the MoMa PS1 in New York. Tillmans is currently based in both London and Berlin.
