Employing a purposeful, rudimentary approach to construction, Robyn Benson creates temporal, self-sufficient structures that exist within an equilibrium of forces. Reliant on each component, the work becomes an exploration of how structural stability is obtained through counterbalance and counteracting forces. Through the engagement of material properties the structures are held in a state of perpetual tension and balance that harnesses the potential energy created between the components, both delineating their individual significance within the structural system and defining the principle logic applied.

Often evolving from diagrams and technical drawings much of Benson’s work resonates from a fascination in the relationship between principle geometric forms and reoccurring systems of support. The diagrams act as propositions, exploring how one shape defines another creating parameters within the drawings that are transposed into the physical constructions through the introduction of load and/or directional forces. In turn the use of repeating identical elements (i.e brick) are intended to formulate visible units of measure within the structures. These units can be measured comparatively within the body of work aiming to form a coherent and continuous investigation.
