Cherelle Sappleton
Cherelle Sappleton is a visual artist working and living in London. She initially started out with a performative practice whilst studying Fine Art and Drama jointly at Bath Spa School of Art. However, after graduating she took a break of four years, she focused her practice on photographic media and image making whilst undertaking postgraduate study. After completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art in 2011, she went on to graduate from the MA Fine Art program at Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design in 2013.
Through image making, she plays with notions of the photographic image. She is fascinated by the 'flatness' and finality of the photographic print and work to playfully disrupt and uses the idea of that surface being a final stopping point. Sometimes working with it’s finality by alluding to tactility & sensuality, other times deconstructing and opening it up into the 3 dimensional realm, allowing the viewer to become part of and physically negotiate the ‘image’. It is via this inquisitive and wandering exploration she simultaneously explores ideas relating to performativity by appropriating, utilising and re-presenting the (feminine) body, creating an interplay between photography as a personal language of imagery and as a physical and material form.
