Datura Hex
Datura Hex immersed himself within the visual arts when he initially needed some cover art for a selection of songs he had made. Since then, Datura has focused mainly on creating visual work that touches upon both gothic and cyberpunk aesthetics. He very much goes with the flow when creating work; this is portrayed in his visuals that have a different outcome every time yet all aline with his overall style. Datura’s music is all you would expect from him as he merges glitch, IDM, metal and future garage together creating extraterrestrial sounds.
How did you fall into working within the arts?
I finished making some songs and wanted some cover art for it and tried making it myself and I was hooked, I really enjoyed it. I started sharing my visuals on discord and Instagram so then fellow musicians hit me up for covers, that really encouraged me and gave me some confidence to spend more time focusing on making visuals.
What would you say best describes your artistic aesthetic?
A mix of metal, goth, cyberpunk and biomech.
Tell us about a project you are currently working on?
Currently working on an album cover for ‘Little Snake’s’ amazing new album. I’m a huge fan of his music and being able to work with him has been amazing.
What softwares and techniques do you use to create visual work?
Softwares I use are Blender, Photoshop and Illustrator. Techniques wise I like to just improv and make things up on the spot, working towards something concrete sort of takes me out of this sense of discovery and flow that I really enjoy. I’m all about enjoying the process and happy accidents, I find that often gives me the best results to.
You also make experimental music, what inspires your sound?
I like a lot of different music genres so I guess my sound is sort of a mix of all the genres I enjoy. Huge fan of glitch, IDM, metal and future garage.
Have you collaborated with other artists to create work?
Yes, I love collaborating with fellow artists. I find it leads to some very unexpected results that are inspiring, and it’s just a great way to meet fellow creatives to.
What are your plans for the future in terms of your practice?
In the future I would like to 3D print my designs and do crazy things to them, set them on fire, cast them in weird materials, melt them and paint them. Maybe make some little videos and have my own exhibitions.
