Berlin based artist Joakim Heidvall left his hometown Stockholm some years ago. A graduate from the Swedish Royal Institute of Art. He brought with him a series of paintings entitled Valis, based on a novel by the American science fiction writer Philip K Dick.

The novel had a profound effect; he began to collect copies in all languages, going on to make 28 x 19 oil on wood paintings based on the front covers. Just as life might develop, so does an artist. But a picture never simply presents reality, it is always made from a specific point of view.

The picture maker always encounters the same problems, of how to present time and space. There is nothing formulaic about Joakim Heidvall’s paintings. He aims to make the best out of each situation. His paintings are about painting itself, about a perceived reality.
