Joseph Marioni
Joseph Marioni is a painter based in New York City. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943. He has over sixty works in public collections and about 560 works in private collections. He was awarded the Berwanger Award in 1997 and received a Doctor of Fine Arts Honorary in 2010 by the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
Initially, Marioni’s works appear to be monochromatic and riveted. Upon closer view, however, different layers come to surface and Marioni’s multiple processes of painting on layers through his own fingers, rollers, and palette knives become apparent. His work is very much influenced by the Minimalist, Conceptualist, and American Abstraction movements. Marioni sees color as an experience that is constantly changing, rather than a stable entity. He is very interested in the interaction between light and pigment and one can see the alternate colors when viewing his works from different visual perspectives. Marioni’s paintings visualize the painterly process and emphasize different approaches in the process of observing.
