きつね: Kitsune
Kistune, the Japanese word for fox, lies at the heart of Ali Yavuz Ata’s eccentric photo series. The photographer explores the Japanese folklore belief that these red majestic creatures have the ability to shape shift into men and women. Stories depict them as intelligent beings, possessing paranormal abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. This is portrayed in the wacky styling of fox tails with high end designer clothing and furry ears offset by layers of western belts. In one photo, the model crawls on the floor in a Prada bucket hat and fishnet gloves with a fox tail peeping out the back of open-zipped red trousers as if the quasi mythical creature was in the middle of metamorphizing from woman to fox. Foxes are particularly renowned for impersonating beautiful women; and Ata’s highly stylized creatures are no different.
