Luca Massaro

Luca Massaro

Luca Massaro was born in 1991 and lives and works in Milan. Self-taught photographer, he received his degree in Literature, Communication, and Media at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano and Université Sorbonne Paris IV. His thesis explored the modern relationship between photo images and word through visual arts and communication, and there's traces of this background and obsession in both his personal and commissioned works. He is the founder of LDS Editions and Gallery — experimental platforms dedicated to the intersection of printed matter and virtual corollaries, and an artist-run exhibiting space at the intersection of interior and exterior / IRL and URL in Reggio Emilia. He has published several artist books including Foto Grafia in 2015 with Danilo Montanari Editore and L’Aquila e La Rana / The Eagle & The Toad in 2014. He has partaken in various solo exhibitions, some of which include Leggere Parole/Light Words in 2015 and quasi-quasi at Matèria Gallery Rome in 2015. His new work, Vietnik, will take part in a collective exhibition called Sideways at Palazzo Casotti Reggio Emilia in May 2016 for Fotografia Europea Festival, among the winners of Giovani Artisti Italiani. The photographer had a residency, Confotografia, at L’Aquila in 2013, won the Nascimben Prize U25 in 2014 at Fondazione Benetton, and was shortlisted for Premio Fabbri, Premio Prina and Portfolio Review Dusseldorf.

Massaro has been featured in several publications and worked with magazines including Alla Carta, AnOther.com, Bullett Media, Paper Journal, Rivista Studio, VICE and several more. His photography is vivid with bold colors and strong, defined lines and angles, with an eye for architecture. His work brings about a frontal focus to behind-the-scenes images with a recognizable originality and coherent leitmotiv between commissioned and personal work. Thoughts left behind are, in Massaro’s work, prominent and refuse to be overlooked. There is a soft vivaciousness to his photography that is undeniably attractive and inviting.
