Igor Pisuk

Photographer Igor Pisuk was born on October 14, 1984 in Bielsko-Biala, Poland and is represented by the STAIN Gallery. He received his master’s degree in photography at film school in Lodz, Poland. Now living in Stockholm, Sweden, the Polish photographer is also part of Atonal Collective, which focuses exclusively on a personal documentation style of photography. He has won numerous awards for his street photography such as the Polish edition of Leica Street Photo in 2015 and 2013 and the Fujifilm calendar in 2014. His latest group exhibition was in 2016 for “Off the Wall” in Luxembourg and he also came in third place for the Gomma photography grant.

Pisuk’s work, with its striking contrast, creates an eery and disturbing sense of defamiliarization that is fascinating. He shoots self-portraits so as to encapsulate and understand his own state of mind at a particular moment in time. His photography is a therapeutic form for Pisuk and functions as a visual, poetic diary. Pisuk doesn’t shy away from themes of pain, loneliness, and addiction in his photos. The photographer prefers honest, brutal shots that create reactions and emotions over conventionally beautiful and idyllic images. He refused to plan narratives around his photos pre-shooting. Pisuk’s work captures moments we typically look away from and cringe at in the form of self-reflection, and captivates us in a way that leads to recognition, acknowledgment, and even appreciation.
