Sofie Fatouretchi
From Los Angeles to Vienna, Sofie Fatouretchi glides through the realms of her creativity. With her radio âSofieâs Tapesâ soon to be released on Austrian national radio, we contemplate her past, present and future.
Can you tell me about the evolution of your painting? What have been the main influences on your aesthetic?â¨
I honestly havenât been painting in a realm I can be judged on for long, so itâs always interesting to me to see how things progress. Most of what has influenced me is the use of different materials, and the unpredictability thereof. Iâve been working a lot with ceramics.â¨
What concepts or references do you tend to focus on when it comes to your painting?â¨
It changes so frequently and is very mood dependent. Sometimes it comes to me naturally, I have specific colours and certain materials I like to use and [with which] Iâm satisfied â to an extent â with the outcome. Other times I get very frustrated. But really, anything can be a reference. I got given a little religious booklet at an Indian supermarket a few months ago and the depictions therein have been a strong reference.
You work as a DJ, model and musician as well. How do you relate to the different realms you work in?
â¨I DJ mostly to earn a living, and I kind of rag on it, but when itâs fun itâs really fun! I like to think that the different things I do feed in to each other creatively to a certain extent, but a lot of times it can be exhausting. I guess Iâm a little all over the place in the sense that when I only to do one singular activity as my practice or whatever, Iâd very likely get bored quickly. Or, have to pour all my efforts in to one endeavour and God forbid I try that out; itâs probably a fear of myself, fear of failure. â¨
What insinuated you to concentrate on studying painting, as well as your work as a musician?â¨
After having left Los Angeles, and living in Vienna, I wanted to take advantage of the fact that I can afford to study here. That I happened to find a class I really wanted to be a part of was, largely, luck and chance. â¨
One of your most talked about projects is Sofie and the Cult Survivors. What does this project mean to you?â¨The Cult Survivors is, I suppose, my band, which isnât really a band but rather a loose formation of various people that have, at some point in time, played my songs with me. The people have changed over time; some survive the cult, some donât.
Whatâs next for you?
â¨Working on a bigger, music related project for Stones Throw that Iâm very excited to finish up.â¨
