Through the installations and editions he makes, Alex Chevalier is questioning the relation of the artist to his everyday life and his position in the contemporary society. A practice where an opposition puts side by side aesthetics and activism, silence and speech, private and public space, creating a shifting from everyday space (urban context) into the art gallery and vice versa.
Heir to a certain history of painting and minimalist art, the artist inscribes his practice in the space he works in. Every created elements develops its own pictoriality, a monochromatic work made on found materials which are bringing their own constraints, textures and colors.
In this practice of the pictoriality, the work of the space is key ; whether it be a conversation between interior and exterior, an extraction of shapes, materials or textures, every elements of the architecture and the specificities of the intervention and exhibition spaces are seen as the triggering elements which are permuting the pictoriality of the artwork.
