Anna Adamo
Photographer Anna Adamo was born in 1991 near Milan, Italy. Adamo studied at the Arts of Monza, but decided to pursue a career in photography without an academic background. Adamo works as a photographer for the photography collective, Cesura founded by Magnum member Alex Majoli. Adamo is currently based in Paris.
Her series “Gabber” concerns a subculture in Rotterdam in the 90s which revolves around hardcore music. The Gabbers, similar to Skinheads, were known for their bright colors and shaved heads and fascist-leaning political philosophies. It later diverted from such controversial and problematic political ideologies and instead identified as a “nonpolitical subculture”.
The Italian photographer attended several hardcore parties in Italy in 2014, self-describing herself as “half observer” and “half participant”. Adamo’s fascination with the Gabbers, like other photographic subjects takes on a participatory and interactive relationship.
