Giovanni Leonardo Bassan
Giovanni Leonardo Bassan, mentee of Michele Lamy, was born in 1989 in Marostica, Italy. His schooling began in Liceo artistico A. Martini. Schio (2003-2008) and culminated in a degree in interior design from Politecnico di Milano (2009-2011). The Italian artist currently lives and works in Paris, France. His first show was in July 2015 with Pierre-Ange Carlotti, entitled “Project 89 Paradis”, and his first solo show was in December 2015 in an Iranian art gallery, The Mine, in Dubai.
Bassan cites that his creative process is heavily inspired by his own surroundings and personal battles. His interests lie in our own mental capacities and predicaments from the onset of birth. This is evident in the fiercely powerful emotions portrayed in his artwork. His figurative paintings fuse together the historical and contemporary with classical form imposed upon modern subjects. His works raises issues of sexuality, sex, violence, masculinity, suppression, and subjugation all with a sacred element to it. Amidst all the zealousness and almost blockbuster-like themes of sex and violence, there is a sense of delicateness or frailty in his work. Bassan merges many Italian Renaissance techniques with modern concepts through the form and technique of art and captivatingly uses its as an accessible form of communication and dialogue for today.
